Many of you will be too young to have read Ayn Rand’s work.

In my early 20’s, her Fountainhead and then Atlas Shrugged (a very looong 1000 pager), turned my world upside down with her out of the box look at the world.

There was a speech by Francisco about money that was 30 pages long (and the writing was really small – so it was a lot to digest), which contained the core of her philosophy.

Daan Joubert was kind enough to remind me by sending this VERY salient excerpt, which I am sure is the apex of the speech.

This was written in 1957, and yet its is incredibly pertinent today. (The highlights and colouring are mine.)

“Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion–when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing–when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors–when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you–when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice–you may know that your society is doomed.

Money is so noble a medium that is does not compete with guns and it does not make terms with brutality. It will not permit a country to survive as half property, half-loot…

…Gold was an objective value, an equivalent of wealth produced. Paper is a mortgage on wealth that does not exist, backed by a gun aimed at those who are expected to produce it. Paper is a check drawn by legal looters upon an account which is not theirs: upon the virtue of the victims. Watch for the day when it bounces, marked, ‘Account overdrawn..’”

Daan asks the question:  Is Putin destroying Bretton Woods?

I am not sure what Putin’s whole agenda is, nor do I like how he operates. His enslavement of the Russian people is totally repugnant to me,  but I admire the fact that he is using the advantage of a long term view, because he knows he will be milking the Russian money making machine for a loooong time, and his vision is VERY clear and he has carefully and very cleverly worked out how the end the tyranny of the LEGAL LOOTERS, who are manipulating the Armageddon of the Western world.
